China's Cars Conquer Paris

· Automobile team
The 2026 Paris Motor Show highlighted a significant transformation in Europe's automotive industry. The number of participating Chinese brands doubled from 10 in 2024 to 20, bringing an impressive variety of electric vehicles, hybrids and innovative technologies to the French capital.
However, the expanding presence revealed different approaches to entering the European market. While some manufacturers are developing vehicles specifically for local customers, others continue offering models originally designed for China.
Why Chinese Carmakers Are Expanding
Europe represents an attractive opportunity for Chinese automotive manufacturers seeking international growth. Domestic competition in China is intense, encouraging companies to explore new markets and diversify their product ranges. The Paris exhibition demonstrated how manufacturers are adapting to different consumer preferences.
Smaller electric cars, sophisticated software and local production partnerships have become important parts of their European strategies. However, establishing a lasting presence requires more than introducing technologically advanced vehicles. Companies must also develop reliable sales networks and earn customer confidence.
Which Manufacturers Are Adapting To Europe?
Several established Chinese brands demonstrated clear efforts to meet European expectations. Xpeng presented its compact L03, developed specifically for the European market. The company's emphasis on advanced software and driver-assistance technology was complemented by manufacturing arrangements with Magna in Graz, Austria. BYD also showcased smaller and compact vehicles suitable for European cities. However, its Shark pickup demonstrated ambitions beyond Europe. Measuring more than 5.5 metres long, the vehicle is better suited to markets where larger vehicles are popular.
Leapmotor highlighted its cooperation with Stellantis, displaying compact models designed to appeal to European customers. These strategies demonstrate how localisation is becoming increasingly important.
New Technology Takes Centre Stage
Newcomers Li Auto and Changan introduced vehicles featuring range-extender technology. Unlike conventional electric cars, these models combine electric propulsion with combustion engines that generate additional electricity when needed. Li Auto's L6 features a 50 kWh battery, allowing extensive electric operation before its engine becomes necessary.
Changan displayed the Deepal S07, featuring design work associated with former Volkswagen designer Klaus Zyciora. Both manufacturers emphasised refined interiors, sophisticated digital systems and electric driving comfort. These vehicles also reflect China's broad automotive strategy, which includes battery-electric cars, hybrids and range-extender models.
Why Some Brands Face Difficulties
Not every Chinese manufacturer has maintained a consistent presence in Europe. Great Wall Motor last participated in the Paris exhibition in 2022, while Hongqi, which attracted attention in 2024, was absent this year. MG also stayed away despite its established European sales presence.
Meanwhile, GAC participated but had yet to fulfil its previously announced German market launch plans.
These differences suggest that exhibition appearances do not necessarily translate into successful market expansion.
What This Means For European Drivers
Increasing competition could provide consumers with more vehicle choices, improved technology and alternatives across different price categories. However, European manufacturers retain important advantages, including established reputations, extensive service networks and loyal customers.
Chinese newcomers must demonstrate consistent quality and dependable long-term support.
The Paris Motor Show revealed an automotive market undergoing significant change. The manufacturers most capable of adapting their products to European expectations may be better positioned to build a lasting presence.
