Do you enjoy a warm breakfast that feels special but is easy to prepare? French toast is a lovely choice. We soak thick bread in a smooth mixture of eggs and milk, then cook it gently in butter until both sides turn golden.
The inside stays soft, while fresh blueberries, figs, powdered sugar, and maple syrup add color, sweetness, and fresh flavor. With a few simple ingredients and clear steps, we can make this comforting breakfast at home.

Ingredients for 3 Slices

Thick bread works well because it can absorb the egg mixture without falling apart. Slightly firm bread also gives a pleasant contrast between the golden surface and tender middle. For the French toast and the topping, prepare:
- 3 thick slices of bread
- 2 large eggs
- 60 ml milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- 10 g butter
- 50 g blueberries
- 2 fresh figs
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
- 20 ml maple syrup

Step 1: Prepare the Fruit

Wash the blueberries under cool running water and drain them well. Rinse the figs gently, pat them dry, and cut each one into halves or quarters. Measure the milk, maple syrup, and butter before cooking. Having everything ready keeps the process smooth once the pan is hot.

Step 2: Make the Egg Mixture

Place the 2 eggs in a wide, shallow bowl, which lets each slice lie flat. Add the 60 ml milk and whisk for about 30 seconds until smooth. For a warm spice flavor, add the 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and whisk again. The mixture should look creamy, with no streaks of egg white.

Step 3: Soak the Bread

Place one slice in the egg mixture. Soak it for about 10 seconds, then turn it and soak the other side for another 10 seconds. If the bread is thin or very soft, reduce the time to about 5 seconds per side.
Lift the slice carefully and let excess liquid drip back into the bowl. The bread should be moist but still firm enough to handle. Repeat with the remaining slices.

Step 4: Cook With Butter

Place a non-stick frying pan over low to medium-low heat. Add the 10 g butter and let it melt slowly, spreading it across the surface. Then carefully place the soaked bread in the pan, leaving some space between the slices so they are easy to turn.
Cook the first side for about 2 to 3 minutes. After 2 minutes, gently lift one edge with a spatula. If the surface underneath is golden, turn the slice over. If it is still pale, cook for another 30 to 60 seconds.

Step 5: Cook the Other Side

Cook the second side for another 2 to 3 minutes. We can gently press the bread with a spatula, but there is no need to flatten it. Keep the heat moderate throughout, and lower it if the surface browns too quickly.
When both sides look golden and the middle feels warm, transfer the slices to plates.

Step 6: Add the Toppings

Arrange the blueberries around the toast and add the figs beside or on top of the slices. Use a small sieve to dust the powdered sugar lightly over the surface, then drizzle the maple syrup over the toast.
For a less sweet serving, we can start with half the syrup and add more at the table.

Serve While Warm

French toast is best served soon after cooking. The surface should be lightly crisp and golden, while the inside remains soft and tender. The berries provide a fresh, juicy bite, the figs bring gentle sweetness, and maple syrup adds a smooth finish.
We can serve two slices with fruit for a generous breakfast or enjoy one slice with extra fruit for a lighter plate.

Simple Tips for Better Results

The key to good French toast is gentle cooking. A pan that is too hot can brown the bread before the middle has warmed properly. Soaking time matters too. Too little liquid leaves the bread dry, while too much can make it difficult to turn.
Once we understand these simple details, the recipe becomes easy to adjust. We can change the fruit, add cinnamon, or serve the syrup separately according to our preferences.
