Lykkers, Valle de la Luna may be one of the first places travelers put on their San Pedro de Atacama itinerary, but it is far from the only attraction worth exploring.
Within a short drive of the town are dramatic rock formations, ancient archaeological sites, thermal pools, high-altitude landscapes, and some of the clearest skies for stargazing.

Explore Valle de la Muerte

Valle de la Muerte is one of the closest places to explore after visiting Valle de la Luna. Located only a few kilometres from San Pedro, the area features steep desert formations, sandy slopes, and unusual rock landscapes shaped by erosion.
The site can be reached by a standard vehicle, and walking routes offer a closer look at the scenery. Current visitor information lists access from around US$7 per person, with visiting hours generally from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Valley of the Moon

Visit Pukará de Quitor

History enthusiasts can continue to Pukará de Quitor, a pre-Inca archaeological site located about 3 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama. The settlement occupies a hillside overlooking the surrounding landscape and provides a different perspective on the region beyond its natural scenery.

Relax at Puritama Hot Springs

After several days of desert exploration, Puritama Hot Springs offers a chance to slow down. The thermal pools are located inside a canyon surrounded by desert vegetation. There are eight pools, with water temperatures generally ranging from 28 to 31 degrees Celsius.
The pools currently operate daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Standard admission is approximately US$22 per person, while children up to 12 years old and older visitors pay around US$11.

See the High-Andean Lagoons

For a full-day adventure, travel farther into the Altiplano to see the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons. Their deep blue water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding volcanic peaks and open terrain.
The lagoons are roughly 100 kilometres from San Pedro, so most visitors join an organized excursion rather than attempting the journey independently. Prices vary by operator, but budgeting around US$70 to US$120 per person is reasonable for a standard shared excursion.

Laguna Chaxa is one of the best-known places in the salt-flat area. It forms part of Los Flamencos National Reserve, which protects several different ecosystems around San Pedro de Atacama. Access fees vary by sector, so travelers should check the current ticket requirement before departure.

Visit the Tatio Geysers

An early morning trip to the Tatio Geysers offers an entirely different desert experience. Steam rises from geothermal vents across a high-altitude landscape, with volcanoes and rugged mountains forming the background.
The geyser field sits around 4,200 metres above sea level. Because of the elevation and challenging road conditions, Chile Travel recommends visiting with a guided excursion. Full-day tours from San Pedro generally cost around US$40 to US$80 per person, depending on inclusions.

Spend an Evening Stargazing

San Pedro is also an excellent base for observing the night sky. The region's dry climate and limited artificial light create favorable conditions for astronomy. Current guided astronomy tours start at approximately US$27 per person, with some more specialized experiences costing around US$57.

Valle de la Luna is only the starting point for discovering San Pedro de Atacama. From the ancient remains of Pukará de Quitor to the warm pools of Puritama, high mountain lagoons, enormous salt flats, steaming geysers, and unforgettable night skies, the region offers something different at every turn.
