Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef offers something unusual: a vast coral ecosystem that can often be reached straight from the beach.

Stretching for about 260km, the reef is home to whale sharks, manta rays, turtles, dugongs and hundreds of fish species, while the dramatic landscapes of Cape Range National Park rise just inland.

Choose The Right Season

Whale sharks are the main attraction, arriving to feed between March and early August. May is particularly popular because sightings tend to peak while temperatures are more comfortable than during the intense summer heat. Humpback whales migrate through the region from June to November, while manta rays and dugongs may be seen throughout the year.

For most travellers, three or four nights around Exmouth is a sensible minimum. Staying longer provides some flexibility if sea conditions disrupt a boat trip and leaves time for snorkelling, kayaking or exploring the national park.

Getting To The Reef

Exmouth is the principal gateway to northern Ningaloo. Travellers with plenty of time can drive roughly 1250km north from Perth, turning the journey into a Coral Coast road trip. Flying is much quicker, with the trip from Perth to Learmonth Airport taking around two hours.

Learmonth Airport lies about 34km from Exmouth. The current door-to-door shuttle costs around €28 for an adults and €19 for a child and takes about 30 minutes.

A hire car is useful if you want to explore Cape Range National Park independently. Vehicle entry to the park currently costs about €11, while entering on foot or by bicycle does not attract the standard vehicle fee.

Swim With Marine Giants

Swimming beside a whale shark is Ningaloo’s signature experience. Licensed tours operate under strict rules designed to limit disturbance, including controls on swimmer numbers and minimum distances from the animals. Current full-day whale shark trips from Exmouth cost around €380 per adults, usually including equipment, food and the use of spotter aircraft to locate the sharks.

You do not need an expensive boat excursion to experience the reef. Turquoise Bay is famous for drift snorkelling close to shore, while other sections of the marine park offer swimming and kayaking. Guided kayak and snorkelling experiences can cost around €108 per adults. Ningaloo was affected by severe marine heat stress and coral bleaching in 2025, so reef conditions can vary between locations.

Explore Beyond The Water

Cape Range National Park adds a completely different landscape to the trip. Red cliffs, limestone formations and deep gorges sit beside the turquoise coastline. The 3km Mandu Mandu Gorge walk is one of the accessible options, although the rocky terrain makes an early start advisable.

Accommodation in Exmouth can start at roughly €96 per night, with average high-season hotel rates closer to €192. At the luxury end, Sal Salis offers safari-style tents inside Cape Range National Park, with official rates starting around €976 per night and meals, park fees and several guided activities included.

For two people sharing a lower-priced room and eating simple local meals, a practical non-tour day can come to roughly €90–€140 per person before flights and car hire. Adding a whale shark excursion changes the budget considerably, but it is also the experience that defines many trips to Ningaloo.
