Forget crowded Mediterranean resorts. Just 30km south of Malmö, the Skanör-Falsterbo peninsula offers a different kind of summer escape, with sweeping beaches, colourful wooden huts and quiet coastal paths.

Often called the Swedish Riviera, this corner of southern Sweden combines seaside relaxation with excellent birdwatching and easy access to nature.

When To Visit The Swedish Riviera

July and August offer the most suitable conditions for swimming and beach holidays. However, even during summer, temperatures can occasionally drop to 13–15°C, and the Baltic Sea remains relatively cool.

September is particularly attractive for cycling, walking and birdwatching, when migrating birds gather around the peninsula. Travellers visiting in mid-July can also attend the annual Falsterbo Horse Show.

Getting There And Getting Around

Skanör-Falsterbo is easily accessible from Malmö and Copenhagen. From Malmö’s Hyllie station, bus 300 reaches Falsterbo in approximately 40 minutes.

Once there, cycling is particularly convenient. The peninsula is relatively flat, with an extensive network of dedicated cycle paths connecting beaches and villages.

For a quieter experience, walk towards the peninsula’s more distant sandbars, where fewer visitors venture.

Birdwatchers should visit Falsterbo Bird Observatory near the lighthouse. Free guided birdwatching excursions take place on weekend mornings during summer.

The peninsula stretches just 10km from north to south, making it particularly rewarding to explore on foot or by bicycle.

Skanör’s harbour is an excellent place to enjoy fresh seafood. Rögeriet Skanör specialises in local fish, while beachfront Badhytten offers casual dining with sea views.

At Badhytten, a Margherita pizza costs approximately €16, while a vegetarian artichoke dish costs around €17. For traditional Swedish cooking, consider Skanörs Gästgifvaregård.

A practical budget for a camping holiday is approximately €60–95 per person per day, including a basic pitch, simple meals and bicycle hire. Choosing a boutique hotel will increase expenses.
