September offers a different way to experience Europe. Mediterranean beaches remain inviting, historic cities become more comfortable to explore, and smaller towns gradually return to their everyday rhythms.
With the busiest summer weeks over, travellers have greater flexibility to combine coastal holidays with cultural discoveries. Although prices do not fall everywhere, choosing the right destination and travelling midweek can make a considerable difference to both the cost and quality of a holiday.

Portugal: Sunshine And Coastal Trails

Portugal is particularly appealing in September. Lisbon and Porto remain lively, while milder temperatures make exploring their historic neighbourhoods more enjoyable.
Lisbon is also practical for travellers relying on public transport. A single metro and bus ticket costs €1.90, while a 24-hour pass covering both networks costs €7.25.
Beyond the cities, the Alentejo offers peaceful villages and countryside landscapes. The Costa Vicentina is especially suitable for coastal hiking, with dramatic Atlantic cliffs and quieter beaches. Four to five days provide enough time to combine Lisbon with a nearby coastal escape.

Spain: Culture Beyond The Beaches

Northern Spain offers a refreshing alternative to the intense heat of the south. San Sebastián, Bilbao and Galicia combine Atlantic scenery with impressive architecture, traditional markets and coastal walking routes.
Barcelona is another option for travellers interested in culture. September's more comfortable temperatures make it easier to explore the city's distinctive architecture and public spaces.
General admission to Park Güell costs €18, while children under seven enter free.
A four-day city break allows time for major attractions without sacrificing the pleasure of discovering less familiar neighbourhoods.

Greece: Islands At A Slower Pace

The Greek islands retain much of their summer atmosphere in September. Crete and Rhodes offer warm conditions, while Naxos and Paros combine beaches with traditional villages and scenic walking routes.
Athens also becomes more attractive as temperatures moderate. Visitors can explore the Acropolis, whose standard admission costs €30, before continuing towards the Peloponnese or nearby islands.
Allow at least five days for an island holiday, particularly when ferry journeys are involved. Early September generally offers better conditions for swimming and island hopping.

Slovenia: Mountains And Lakes

Slovenia is well suited to travellers who prefer outdoor adventures to crowded resorts. Ljubljana, Lake Bled and the Soča Valley offer a compact combination of historic streets, mountain scenery and hiking trails.
Ljubljana Castle provides panoramic views over the capital. Adults admission costs €15, or €19 with a return funicular journey.
Three or four days allow visitors to explore Ljubljana and nearby natural attractions, while a week provides time for a more relaxed journey through the country.

Making September Work For You

The first half of September generally suits Mediterranean beach holidays, while the later weeks are attractive for city breaks and countryside escapes. However, major festivals can temporarily increase accommodation demand, and seasonal transport services may operate less frequently.
Rather than visiting several destinations in quick succession, consider spending three or four nights in one location before moving to a second base. Regional trains and ferries can make the journey part of the experience.
September's greatest advantage is the opportunity to travel without following the exhausting rhythm of midsummer. With thoughtful planning, Europe offers warm afternoons, distinctive local experiences and considerably more room to explore at your own pace.
