Quttinirpaaq National Park, Canada

Located on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Quttinirpaaq is one of Canada's most isolated national parks. The park is most accessible from May through August, when conditions are more suitable for travel. Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland

Ittoqqortoormiit is one of Greenland's most isolated settlements and sits beside the vast Scoresby Sound fjord system. The best time depends on the planned activities. July and August are particularly suitable for sailing and hiking, while the colder months from February through May can provide opportunities for winter activities and northern-lights viewing.

Getting there requires several stages. Travelers can fly to Nerlerit Inaat Airport and then complete the final journey of roughly 40 kilometers by helicopter, boat, or snowmobile, depending on the season and weather conditions.

Accommodation is available through small guesthouses and local properties. Ittoqqortoormiit Guesthouse lists rooms from approximately US$161 per night for a single room and around US$207 per night for a double room. Airport transfers can cost approximately US$31.

Dining choices are limited because of the settlement's small population. Travelers staying at guesthouses with cooking facilities may find it useful to plan meals in advance and bring suitable supplies when possible.

Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Longyearbyen offers a more accessible introduction to remote Arctic travel. The settlement has an airport, hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, shops, and organized excursions. Flights operate from mainland Scandinavian cities, with the journey from Oslo taking roughly three hours.

The airport shuttle provides transportation between the airport and accommodation in Longyearbyen. A one-way ticket costs approximately US$11.68. Many places around the settlement can also be reached on foot, while taxis and organized excursions are available for longer distances.

Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to more private properties. Gjestehuset 102 has rooms from approximately US$42 per night, while Tommy's Lodge can cost around US$212 per night for up to two guests during selected periods.

Food options are more varied than in the other remote destinations featured here. Restaurant Kroa serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a vegetarian pizza priced at approximately US$24.

Winter activities can add considerably to the budget. A 3.5-hour northern-lights snowmobile excursion costs approximately US$249. Other excursions include snowmobiling, hiking, and boat trips, with prices varying according to season and duration.

Best Time to Plan

For Quttinirpaaq, the warmer Arctic season from May through August provides the main opportunity for visiting. Ittoqqortoormiit offers different experiences throughout the year, with summer suited to hiking and sailing and the late winter period offering opportunities for northern-lights viewing. Longyearbyen has activities throughout the year, although the experience changes dramatically between summer and winter.

Remote travel offers something that conventional destinations cannot easily provide: a genuine feeling of distance and discovery. Choosing the right season, allowing extra travel time, arranging accommodation early, and understanding the limitations of local transportation can turn an ambitious remote adventure into a much smoother experience.
