Mont Avic and the Matterhorn

Most travelers associate the Matterhorn with Zermatt, but the mountain can also be admired from Italy's Aosta Valley under very different conditions. On clear mornings, higher trails within Mont Avic Natural Park reveal the distinctive pyramid-shaped summit rising beyond a series of alpine ridges, while low clouds often drift through the valleys below.
Instead of focusing on one famous viewing platform, this part of the Alps rewards hikers who enjoy quieter landscapes of mountain lakes, larch forests and granite peaks. Spend two nights in Champdepraz or nearby villages and devote one full day to the park. The combination of peaceful trails and expansive mountain scenery creates a very different experience from the busy international resorts on the opposite side of the mountain.
Walk Into the High Alps
Mont Avic Natural Park is best explored on foot. The scenery changes steadily with elevation, moving from forests and streams to alpine meadows, rocky slopes and broad panoramas across the surrounding mountain ranges.
Start from Covarey
Covarey is the principal gateway to the park and one of the most practical starting points for first-time visitors.
Begin hiking around 07:30 or 08:00 while temperatures remain cool. Many of the park's most rewarding routes gradually climb toward alpine lakes, allowing the scenery to unfold naturally rather than revealing everything at once.
One excellent objective is Lago Bianco, reached by a trail of roughly 10–12 km return depending on the chosen route. Most walkers complete the outing in about four to five hours, including rest stops and photography.
Carry at least 1.5 litres of water, a windproof outer layer and trekking shoes with reliable grip. Although the trails are well established, rocky sections become uneven at higher elevations.
From the upper slopes, broad views extend across the Aosta Valley, and on exceptionally clear mornings the distant Matterhorn rises above the surrounding mountain skyline.
Stay for changing light
The mountain landscape changes dramatically through the day.
Morning often brings calmer air and clearer visibility, making distant peaks easier to distinguish. By afternoon, cloud can begin forming around higher summits, adding depth to the valleys but sometimes hiding the farthest mountains.
Rather than rushing back after reaching one viewpoint, allow extra time beside one of the alpine lakes. Their still water reflects surrounding peaks and provides a peaceful contrast to the rugged granite slopes.
Late June through September generally offers the most reliable hiking season. Snow has usually retreated from the principal trails, alpine flowers cover many meadows, and daylight remains long enough for relaxed walks without feeling hurried.
Slow Down in the Aosta Valley
Mont Avic is not a destination filled with famous landmarks every few kilometres. Its appeal comes from spending time in one landscape rather than constantly moving between attractions.
Choose a village base
Champdepraz is the most convenient base for reaching the park entrance, while nearby mountain villages provide additional accommodation in quieter surroundings.
Comfortable guesthouses and small hotels generally range from EUR 100–180 per night for a double room, depending on the season and booking date.
For two travelers sharing accommodation, EUR 220–340 per person is a practical budget for two nights, meals, local driving and ordinary hiking expenses.
A private vehicle provides the greatest flexibility because public transport to the upper trailheads is limited. Parking is available near the main visitor access points before beginning the hike.
Avoid planning long transfers to other Alpine destinations on the same day. The roads through the valley are scenic enough to deserve a slower pace, and shortening your driving time leaves more energy for the mountains.
Reserve one sunrise
If the weather forecast predicts a clear morning, set aside one sunrise specifically for the mountains.
Choose an open viewpoint near your accommodation or along the approach toward the park rather than attempting a difficult pre-dawn summit hike. As the first light reaches the higher peaks, the granite gradually shifts from cool blue-grey to soft gold before illuminating the valleys below.
Bring an extra insulating layer even in midsummer. Temperatures before sunrise at mountain elevations can feel surprisingly cold, especially if there is any wind.
After sunrise, return for breakfast before beginning your main hike. This simple schedule divides the day naturally instead of compressing every activity into a single continuous outing.
Mont Avic is often overlooked by travelers heading directly toward more famous Alpine destinations, yet that quieter atmosphere is part of its appeal. Spend one morning watching the first light spread across distant peaks, follow the trails through forests and alpine lakes during the day, and allow the landscape to reveal itself gradually. The reward is not simply another view of the Matterhorn, but a broader appreciation of the Italian Alps that surround it.
