Many travelers pass through Höfn on the Ring Road without staying long, but this small coastal town is one of the most practical bases for exploring southeastern Iceland.

Snow-covered mountains rise directly across the coastline, while glaciers, lagoons, and black-sand beaches are all within easy driving distance. For Lykkers, the biggest decision is not what to see, but how many nights to stay and how to organize each day efficiently during winter.

Use Höfn as Your Base

Rather than changing hotels every night, staying in Höfn reduces driving time and gives you flexibility when Iceland's weather changes unexpectedly.
How to Reach Höfn
Höfn is located on Iceland's Ring Road, about 460 kilometres from Reykjavík.
Driving from Reykjavík normally takes 6.5–7.5 hours without long sightseeing stops. Winter weather may increase travel time considerably, so avoid planning the drive after dark if heavy snow or strong winds are expected.
Many visitors combine Höfn with stops at Vik, Skaftafell, or Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon before arriving.
If you prefer not to drive the entire distance, domestic flights connect Reykjavík with Höfn in about one hour, followed by a short taxi ride into town.
A rental car remains the most practical choice because most natural attractions around Höfn are not connected by frequent public transport.
How Long Should You Stay?
One night is enough if Höfn is simply a stop along the Ring Road, but two nights provide a much more relaxed experience.
With two nights, you can dedicate one day to nearby coastal scenery and another to glacier attractions without worrying about long return drives.
Most key destinations are comfortably reached within one hour.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is about 80 kilometres west of Höfn, requiring approximately one hour by car.
Diamond Beach is directly across the road from the lagoon, making it easy to visit both locations during the same outing.
Vestrahorn Mountain, one of Iceland's best-known coastal peaks, lies roughly 20 kilometres east of Höfn and takes about 20 minutes to reach.

Plan Around Winter Conditions

Winter scenery is spectacular, but shorter daylight hours make planning much more important than during summer.
A Practical One-Day Route
08:30 — Leave Höfn after checking the latest road and weather conditions.
09:00 — Stop at Vestrahorn for coastal views and photography.
10:30 — Begin driving toward Jökulsárlón.
11:30–13:00 — Explore Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach.
13:00–14:00 — Have lunch before beginning the return drive.
15:00–16:00 — Return to Höfn before dusk whenever possible.
This route covers approximately 200 kilometres in total, leaving enough flexibility for weather changes or longer photography stops.
If road conditions deteriorate, shortening the itinerary is usually a better decision than trying to reach every planned destination.
Budget for the Trip
A realistic daily budget, excluding accommodation and vehicle rental, is around ISK 8,000–15,000 per person.
A casual lunch generally costs about ISK 2,500–4,500, while dinner at a local restaurant often ranges from ISK 4,000–7,000.
Fuel is one of the largest travel expenses in Iceland. For visitors driving the southeastern section of the Ring Road, allowing ISK 8,000–15,000 for fuel over several days is a practical estimate, depending on vehicle type and total distance.
Hotels in Höfn usually range from ISK 22,000–40,000 per night for a standard double room, while guesthouses outside the town may offer lower rates.
Booking accommodation well in advance is worthwhile, especially between late autumn and early spring when room availability becomes more limited.
Winter Driving Tips
Never judge road conditions only by the weather outside your hotel. Strong winds, drifting snow, and icy sections may affect mountain roads differently from the coastline.
Check Iceland's official road conditions before every departure and keep your itinerary flexible enough to delay or shorten a drive if necessary.
Maintain extra following distance on snowy roads and keep your fuel tank above half full whenever traveling outside town.
Finally, do not underestimate daylight. Winter daylight can be limited, making it much safer to complete longer drives during the brightest part of the day instead of returning after sunset.
Höfn is far more than a convenient overnight stop. By staying two nights, limiting daily driving to manageable distances, and building flexible routes around winter conditions, Lykkers can explore southeastern Iceland at a comfortable pace while enjoying some of the country's most dramatic snowy coastal scenery.
