If you want an authentic mountain walk without committing to a full-day alpine expedition, Lac Bénit is one of the strongest choices in Haute-Savoie. Surrounded by limestone cliffs and evergreen forests beneath the Bargy range, this small mountain lake combines rewarding scenery with a manageable hike.

For Lykkers, the important decisions are where to start, how much time to allow, and whether the hike matches your fitness level.

Choose the Right Starting Point

Lac Bénit can be reached by several paths, but one route stands out for first-time visitors because it is shorter, well marked, and easier to plan.
Start from the Morsullaz Parking Area
Most hikers begin from the Morsullaz parking area above the village of Mont-Saxonnex, about 45 kilometres east of Geneva and roughly 20 kilometres from Cluses.
Driving from Geneva normally takes 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic, while Cluses is only about 30 minutes away.
Parking is free but limited. On summer weekends, arriving before 08:30 greatly improves your chances of finding a space close to the trailhead.
Public transport is possible only for part of the journey. The final section usually requires a taxi or a long uphill walk, so renting a car is the most practical option.
How Difficult Is the Hike?
The standard trail to Lac Bénit is approximately 5–6 kilometres return with around 400–450 metres of elevation gain.
Most hikers reach the lake in 1.5–2 hours and return in about 1–1.5 hours. Including breaks, plan four to five hours for the outing.
Although the distance is relatively short, the climb is continuous. Expect rocky sections, exposed tree roots, and uneven ground instead of smooth walking paths.
Supportive hiking shoes are recommended. Ordinary trainers may become uncomfortable if the trail is wet after rain.
Families with older children who regularly hike should find the route manageable, while complete beginners should allow extra time for the climb.
When Should You Go?
The hiking season usually runs from late spring until early autumn, with July and September offering some of the most reliable trail conditions.
For a quieter experience, begin hiking between 08:00 and 09:00. Late morning is typically the busiest period, especially during weekends and school holidays.
Afternoon thunderstorms occasionally develop in the mountains during summer. Starting early reduces the chance of descending during unstable weather.

Make the Most of Your Day

Many visitors simply reach the lake, take a few photographs, and leave. Spending another hour around the shoreline creates a much more relaxed experience without adding significant effort.
A Practical Hiking Plan
08:30 — Arrive at the parking area and prepare for the hike.
08:45 — Begin walking toward Lac Bénit.
10:15–10:45 — Reach the lake.
10:45–12:00 — Walk around the shoreline, enjoy the mountain scenery, or have a picnic.
12:00 — Start the return hike.
13:30–14:00 — Arrive back at the parking area.
This schedule avoids the busiest midday period while leaving plenty of daylight if your pace is slower than expected.
Budget Before You Leave
There is no admission fee for Lac Bénit.
For a self-guided day trip, excluding accommodation and transport, a practical budget is around €20–40 per person. This generally covers food, drinks, and small personal expenses.
There are no shops beside the lake, so bringing lunch is often the most convenient option. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, particularly during warm summer weather.
If you stay overnight in Cluses or nearby villages, standard hotels generally range from €90–160 per night, while guesthouses and small inns may cost around €70–120 depending on the season.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Do not underestimate the elevation gain simply because the hike is short. Walking slowly and taking brief breaks usually makes the climb much more enjoyable.
Avoid arriving after midday during peak summer weekends. Parking fills quickly, and the lakeshore becomes noticeably busier.
Finally, do not rely entirely on mobile reception. Download your map before setting out, as signal quality can vary along parts of the trail.
Lac Bénit is an excellent choice for travelers who want a rewarding alpine hike without tackling a demanding mountain summit. By starting early, allowing four to five hours for the outing, and packing enough food and water, Lykkers can enjoy one of Haute-Savoie's most peaceful mountain landscapes at a comfortable pace.
