Fırtına Deresi cuts through one of the greenest mountain corridors in Rize before reaching the Black Sea near Ardeşen.
Fed by streams descending from the Kaçkar Mountains, the river runs for about 57 km through steep forested terrain, small settlements, tea-growing slopes and historic stone bridges.
Çamlıhemşin makes the most practical base for exploring it. Stay two nights, put rafting at the center of one day, then follow the river upstream after lunch.

Fırtına Creek

Choose Your Rapids Carefully

Fırtına is a natural mountain river, so the experience changes with rainfall and water volume. The useful question is not whether rafting is available, but which section suits your experience and the conditions that morning.
Understand the 23 km course
The established rafting corridor begins about 1 km south of Çamlıhemşin and extends for approximately 23 km downstream. The riverbed is highly rocky, with sections reaching difficulty levels 3, 4 and 5 depending on water flow. Particularly demanding passages occur around kilometres 7, 8 and 9.
Those figures do not mean every commercial trip covers the entire course. Operators can select shorter sections according to water conditions and group ability. Before booking, ask three concrete questions: how many kilometres you will actually paddle, how long you will spend on the water, and what difficulty is expected on that section.
A standard local rafting package can start around TRY 1,750 per person, while upgraded packages may begin around TRY 2,250. Treat these as planning figures because inclusions and trip length can differ.
For a first attempt, route suitability matters far more than paying for the longest possible descent. Helmet and buoyancy aid should be standard, followed by a briefing on paddle commands, raft position and what to do if you enter the water.
Allow roughly two to three hours for the complete activity once preparation, equipment, transport to the starting point and time on the river are included. Do not schedule another fixed activity immediately afterward.
Match the trip to the water
Spring and early summer bring increased flow as mountain snow melts, creating a more energetic river. Heavy rainfall can also raise the water and increase the difficulty of rocky passages. More water is therefore not automatically better, especially for beginners.
Tell the rafting company your experience level before choosing a trip. A first-time paddler may be better suited to a different section from someone who already understands commands and raft movement.
Morning is a sensible time to go. You can finish before lunch and still have several hours to explore the valley afterward. It also prevents rafting from becoming something squeezed between unrelated sightseeing stops.
Dress for immersion rather than for the air temperature. Quick-drying clothing and secure footwear are more useful than ordinary sightseeing clothes, and the river can feel cold even on a warm day.

Keep Following the River

The best second half of the day begins after you change into dry clothes. Instead of leaving Fırtına behind, travel upstream and see the same river from bridges, roads and short walking paths.
Stay in Çamlıhemşin
Çamlıhemşin sits about 22 km inland from the coastal road near Ardeşen, placing you close to rafting operations and deeper sections of Fırtına Valley. Staying here removes the need to commute from Rize before an active morning.
Two nights are sufficient for a focused visit. Arrive during the first afternoon and spend a little time beside the river. Start rafting the following morning, have lunch afterward, then use the afternoon for the upper valley.
A car offers the greatest flexibility, but some rafting packages provide transfers from places including Çamlıhemşin and Ardeşen. If you are not driving, confirm pickup location and return transport before selecting accommodation.
For two travelers sharing accommodation, roughly TRY 5,000–8,000 per person provides a useful two-night allowance for lodging, meals, one standard rafting experience and ordinary local transport. The biggest variable is accommodation: simple guesthouses and more elaborate riverside properties can sit in very different price ranges.
Do not choose accommodation only for a dramatic river view. Check its distance from Çamlıhemşin center and your rafting pickup point as well. A beautiful property far up a side road can create unnecessary transfers.
Give the bridges their own afternoon
Historic stone arch bridges still cross several sections of Fırtına Valley, adding a completely different scale to the river landscape. Instead of trying to photograph every bridge, concentrate on the corridor around Çamlıhemşin and Şenyuva.
Allow two to three hours. Stop at one or two accessible bridges, walk short sections beside the river, and watch how the current changes between narrow rocky passages and broader stretches. From above, rapids that felt chaotic inside the raft become readable patterns of channels, rocks and white water.
This is also a better use of the afternoon than trying to combine rafting, Ayder, Zilkale and several highland settlements into one overloaded route. Those places can justify another day. Fırtına itself already provides enough variety for one coherent itinerary.
The strongest Fırtına experience has two speeds. Spend the morning inside the current, where a few kilometres of rocky water demand concentration and teamwork. Then slow everything down after lunch and follow the river through forest, settlements and old stone bridges.
