Learning, Signals, and Flexibility

Learning is useful when environments vary, while fixed action patterns are useful when the same challenge shows up again and again. Communication also evolves because signals can coordinate behavior. Calls, postures, scents, and movements may warn, attract, threaten, or reassure.
For a signal to last through evolution, it generally needs to be useful on average, whether by informing others honestly or by influencing their responses in a way that benefits the sender.

At the center of animal behavior is a simple filter: behaviors that improved survival and reproduction became more common over generations. That does not mean every action is perfect or conscious. Evolution works with available traits, old constraints, changing environments, and lots of trade-offs.
