Hello, Lykkers! The thrill of spotting a wild Asiatic lion is something few travel experiences can match. Hidden among the dry forests and rolling grasslands of Gujarat, Gir National Park offers visitors the rare opportunity to witness these magnificent animals in their last natural habitat.
Yet the park is much more than a destination for lion sightings. Rich biodiversity, peaceful landscapes, and well-organized safari experiences make Gir one of India's finest wildlife escapes. Planning ahead is the key to enjoying everything this remarkable national park has to offer, from choosing the right season to booking the perfect safari.

Discover the Wild Heart of Gujarat

Established to protect the endangered Asiatic lion, Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary covers over 1,400 square kilometers of protected forests, rocky hills, and rivers. Over the years, conservation efforts have helped the lion population recover, making Gir a global success story for wildlife protection.
While lions are the main attraction, visitors often encounter leopards, striped hyenas, golden jackals, spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai, marsh crocodiles, and more than 300 species of birds. Every safari offers something different, turning even a quiet drive through the forest into an exciting adventure.

Planning Your Journey

The easiest way to reach Gir National Park is by flying to Rajkot Airport or Diu Airport. Diu is the closer option, while Rajkot provides more frequent flight connections. From either airport, taxis are readily available to Sasan Gir, the gateway town to the national park.
A taxi from Diu Airport usually costs between US$30 and US$45, while the journey from Rajkot Airport typically ranges from US$45 to US$70 per vehicle. Travelers looking for a more economical option can use public buses connecting nearby cities to Sasan Gir for approximately US$3 to US$8 per person. Those arriving by train can stop at Sasan Gir Railway Station, located just a few minutes from the safari entrance. Auto rickshaw rides from the station generally cost US$2 to US$4.

Safari Tickets and Visiting Hours

The park entrance fee is generally US$10 to US$15 per visitor. A Jeep Safari, including the required permit and guide, usually costs US$35 to US$55 per vehicle. Since one jeep accommodates several passengers, traveling as a group can make the experience more economical.
Safaris are operated in three sessions each day:
Morning: 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM
Midday: 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Afternoon: 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Gir National Park welcomes visitors from mid-October until mid-June each year. During the monsoon months, the park closes to allow the ecosystem to recover naturally. For pleasant weather and comfortable wildlife viewing, November through March is widely considered the best time to visit. The cooler temperatures make early morning safaris especially enjoyable.
Travelers hoping to improve their chances of seeing lions often choose April and May. Although temperatures are much warmer, animals gather around rivers and waterholes more frequently, creating excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Experiences Beyond the Main Safari

Although the Jeep Safari is the highlight of any visit, Gir offers more than one way to experience its wildlife. The Devalia Interpretation Zone provides a shorter safari experience inside a protected enclosure where wildlife can often be seen within a limited area. This attraction is ideal for visitors with limited time or families traveling with young children.
The entrance fee is approximately US$3 to US$5, while the safari ride inside the zone generally costs US$3 to US$8. The attraction usually operates from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Birdwatching and nature photography are also rewarding activities throughout the region, with no additional charge beyond standard park admission.

Staying in Sasan Gir allows visitors to reach the safari entrance quickly, especially for early morning departures.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

- Choosing neutral-colored clothing helps you blend into the natural surroundings and creates a better wildlife viewing experience.
- Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle are all useful items to pack.
- Arriving at the safari gate at least 30 minutes before departure ensures enough time for ticket verification and registration. Most importantly, remember that wildlife moves freely throughout the forest. Every safari is different, and sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you least expect them.
Gir National Park is one of those destinations that leaves a lasting impression long after the journey ends. Watching the forest wake up at sunrise, listening to birds echo through the trees, and experiencing the excitement of searching for wildlife creates memories that cannot be rushed. With thoughtful planning, the right travel season, and enough time to explore beyond a single safari, your visit will be far more rewarding.
