We can’t wait to share one of Canada’s most stunning natural spots with you. Waterton Lakes National Park, located in southwest Alberta, is where the Rockies meet the prairies, creating breathtaking mountains, sparkling lakes, and open grasslands.
Bordering Glacier National Park in Montana, this area forms the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.
Established in 1895 as Canada’s fourth national park, it was originally called Kootenay Lake Forest Reserve. The park takes its name from Waterton Lake, honoring Victorian naturalist Charles Waterton.

Opening Hours and Ticket Prices

We find it convenient that the park is open year-round, although the best months to visit are May through September, when trails are fully accessible and wildlife is most active. The park entrance fee is:
- Standard (17–64): $9 per day
- Youth (6–16): $7 per day
- Senior (65+): $8 per day
- Family/Group Pass (up to 7 people): $18 per day
Passes can be purchased at the park entrance gates, visitor centers, or online. Some activities, like boat tours, have separate fees ranging from $30–$50 per person.

Getting There and Transportation

We usually drive from Calgary, a scenic 3.5–4 hour journey via Highway 2 and Highway 5. Parking is available at most trailheads, lakes, and the townsite.
For those without a car, shuttle buses operate from Calgary to Waterton during peak season. Expect a round-trip fare of approximately $80–$100 per person. Once inside, most attractions are accessible by foot, bike, or short drives. Rental bikes and taxis are available in the townsite, usually $15–$25 per trip.

Where to Stay

Accommodation inside the park is limited, so we recommend booking early, especially in July and August:
- Waterton Lakes Lodge: Lakeside rooms, private bathrooms, around $200–$250 per night
- Glacier Mountaineer Inn: Comfortable, mid-range option, $150–$180 per night
- Townsite Cabins: Cozy and affordable, $120–$160 per night
- Camping: Red Rock Canyon Campground or Townsite Campground, $25–$40 per night
We find staying near the townsite convenient for dining and shopping, while lakeside accommodation gives us early access to hikes and stunning sunrise views.

Dining Options

We often plan meals around convenience and variety:
- Waterton Lakes Lodge Restaurant: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, dishes $15–$30 per person
- Trapper’s Mountain Grill: Casual meals, burgers, sandwiches, $10–$20 per person
- Local cafés: Coffee, snacks, pastries, $5–$12 per person
- For self-catering, grocery stores in Pincher Creek or townsite markets are available.
Bringing water and trail snacks is essential for long hikes.

Best Trails and Adventures

We love hiking here. Some of our favorite trails include:
- Crypt Lake Trail: 17 km round-trip, difficult, includes a tunnel and ladder. Best started early morning, 6–8 hours.
- Bear’s Peak: 2 km, moderate, short but steep, 360° views of lakes and townsite, 1–1.5 hours.
- Red Rock Canyon: Easy 1.5 km loop, colorful rocks and waterfalls, 45 minutes.
Other options: boat tours on Waterton Lake ($30–$50, 1–2 hours), cycling along park roads, or simple lakeside walks.

Wildlife Watching

Waterton is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. We have spotted:
- Bighorn sheep and deer along valley roads
- Black bears in forested areas
- Birds, including eagles and warblers
Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for wildlife viewing. We always carry binoculars and maintain a safe distance.

Practical Tips

We always pack:
- Layers and rain gear, as mountain weather changes fast
- Water and snacks, especially for hikes
- Sunscreen and hats for sunny days
- Check trail maps and visitor center info before heading out
- Plan accommodation in advance, especially during July–August peak season
