Hey friends! ๐ Ever had that frustrating moment in winter when your car just won't start?
I've been there more times than I can count. Cold weather can make it tough on our cars, but with a little prep, we can avoid those chilly morning headaches.
Let me share what I've learned from personal experience on how to get your car ready for winter's cold starts! โ๏ธ๐
Why does winter make starting harder?
When temperatures drop, your car's battery works harder because cold slows down the chemical reactions inside it. Also, engine oil gets thicker, making the engine harder to turn over. Fuel doesn't vaporize as easily, so the spark plugs have to work extra hard. Basically, cold weather throws a few extra challenges at your car.
Prep #1: Check your battery early
A weak battery will really struggle in cold weather. Before winter hits, I always get my battery tested or replaced if needed. If your battery is over 3 years old, it's a good idea to check it now. Clean any corrosion from battery terminals too โ it helps the electricity flow better!
Prep #2: Use the right oil
Thick oil can slow your engine down when it's freezing outside. Check your car manual for the right winter oil grade or ask your mechanic. I switched to a thinner oil during winter and noticed my car started more smoothly in the morning.
Prep #3: Keep your fuel tank at least half full
Running low on gas in winter can cause moisture to build up inside the tank, which might freeze and cause problems. I try to keep mine at least half full, especially on cold nights.
Prep #4: Warm up your car smartly
Instead of revving the engine right after starting, just let it idle for a minute or two. This warms up the oil and fluids evenly without stressing the engine.
Bonus tip: Keep a jump starter handy
Even with all the prep, sometimes cold mornings surprise us. Having a portable jump starter saved me more than once. It's small, easy to use, and keeps you from relying on strangers for a jump!
