We all love the smooth flow of highway driving—no traffic lights, fewer stops, and a chance to really cruise. But before we get on the expressway, there are a few important steps we must take to make sure our trip is safe and smooth.
Whether it's a short trip or a weekend road adventure, preparing properly can prevent sudden breakdowns or even dangerous situations.
Here's our go-to list of six things every driver should do before hitting the highway.

1. Check Tire Pressure and Condition

Tires are the only part of the car touching the road—so they need to be in top shape. Low tire pressure can affect braking, steering, and even increase fuel use. Worse, damaged or over-worn tires can lead to blowouts at high speeds.
What we should do:
• Use a tire gauge to check the pressure and adjust it to the recommended level (found in the car manual or door frame).
• Inspect for any cuts, cracks, or uneven wear.
• Don't forget to check the spare tire too—just in case!

2. Fill Up and Check Fluids

It might sound simple, but running out of fuel or having low oil on a highway can leave us stranded in a tough spot.
Checklist before driving:
• Top up the fuel tank (especially for long stretches with no service stations).
• Check engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.
• Look under the car for any leaks.
A quick glance under the hood can save us from a lot of trouble later.

3. Test Your Lights and Wipers

Good visibility is key on the highway, especially when we're driving at higher speeds or in unpredictable weather.
Here's what we can do:
• Turn on headlights, taillights, brake lights, and indicators—make sure they all work.
• Try the windshield wipers and top up washer fluid if needed.
• If it looks like rain, bring an umbrella or towel just in case you need to fix anything outside.

4. Check Brakes and Steering Feel

When we're cruising at high speed, we need full confidence in our braking system and steering control. If something feels off, even slightly, it's better to fix it before getting on the road.
What to watch for:
• Any squeaking or grinding when braking
• If the brake pedal feels too soft or too hard
• If the car pulls to one side when steering
A quick drive around the block before hitting the highway helps confirm everything feels right.

5. Plan Your Route and Rest Stops

Knowing where we're going helps us stay relaxed and focused. Highways are fast-paced, and last-minute decisions can be stressful—or dangerous.
How we can prepare:
• Check the route using GPS or a map app in advance
• Note rest stops, petrol stations, and exits
• If we're driving a long distance, schedule breaks every 2 hours to avoid fatigue
Also, let someone know our destination and estimated arrival time—just to be safe.

6. Bring the Right Essentials

Unexpected things can happen even on short drives. Having the right items in the car gives us peace of mind.
Must-haves include:
• Phone charger and power bank
• Emergency kit (flashlight, basic tools, jumper cables)
• Water and some snacks
• Vehicle documents and toll card or cash
If we're driving with others, don't forget extra masks, tissues, or a neck pillow for long trips!

Let's Drive Smart, Not Just Fast

Getting on the highway should feel safe, smooth, and stress-free. With just a few extra minutes of preparation, we can avoid surprises and focus on enjoying the ride.
So Lykkers, what's your pre-highway routine? Do you have any go-to tricks or items you never forget to bring? Let's share and learn from each other—because smart driving starts before the engine even turns on! 🚗💨
