We all love the feeling of a smooth drive, right? Whether we're commuting, road-tripping, or just heading to the store, our car's engine is doing the hard work behind the scenes.
But just like how we need regular check-ups, our engine also needs care to stay strong and reliable.
Today, let's break down how we can keep our engines running like new—without needing to be a mechanic.

Check the Engine Oil Regularly

Oil is like the lifeblood of our car's engine. It keeps all the moving parts inside from grinding together and wearing out too quickly. That's why we need to check the oil level and color often. If the oil is too low or looks dirty (thick and dark), it's time for a change. Most cars need an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers, but always check the owner's manual for the best advice.

Use the Right Type of Oil

Not all engine oils are the same. Using the wrong type can cause long-term damage. We should always use the oil recommended by our car's manufacturer—this info is usually in the manual or on a label near the engine. High-quality oil protects better and can even improve fuel efficiency, so it's worth spending a bit more for the right stuff.

Don't Skip the Air Filter

Just like we breathe, our engines need clean air to perform well. If the air filter is dirty, the engine will struggle to get the oxygen it needs and may burn more fuel. Replacing the air filter every 12,000 to 24,000 kilometers (or once a year) helps the engine "breathe" better, which keeps performance up and fuel use down.

Warm Up the Engine Before Driving Off

We're often in a rush, but letting the engine run for just 30 seconds to a minute before driving—especially on cold mornings—can make a big difference. This gives the oil time to circulate and coat the engine parts properly. Avoid high speeds right after starting the car; ease into driving to give the engine a gentle start.

Keep an Eye on the Coolant

Overheating is one of the fastest ways to damage an engine. The coolant (or antifreeze) keeps the engine at the right temperature, especially on hot days or in traffic. Make sure the coolant level is always between the "min" and "max" marks in the coolant tank. If it's low, top it up with the right mixture—but only when the engine is cool!

Don't Ignore Warning Lights

If the "Check Engine" light comes on, we shouldn't just hope it goes away. It could be something small like a loose gas cap, or it could be something serious like engine misfiring. It's best to get it checked early before the problem grows. Ignoring it could lead to bigger repairs and even breakdowns.

Drive Smoothly and Avoid Harsh Habits

How we drive affects how long the engine lasts. If we constantly accelerate hard, slam the brakes, or drive in heavy traffic for long periods, the engine works harder and wears out faster. Try to drive steadily, avoid riding the clutch (for manual cars), and shift gears gently. Your engine will thank you for the kindness.

Keep Up with Regular Servicing

Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent expensive repairs. That includes oil changes, air filter checks, coolant refills, and checking spark plugs or belts. Many of these things don't cost much but make a huge difference in engine health. Following the service schedule in our car manual is the easiest way to stay on track.
